Step 2 of 6

Measure your
property

We'll use these measurements to calculate exact wire quantities, insulator counts, warning signs, and earth rod requirements.

How to measure your perimeter: Walk the outside of your property boundary and measure the total distance in metres. If you don't have an exact measurement, estimate: a standard 50×100ft plot is approximately 90–100m. A 1-acre square plot is approximately 250m. For farms, use Google Maps satellite view to estimate.
Step 3 of 6

How many wire
strands do you need?

More strands = stronger deterrence but more wire and larger energizer required. Each strand adds a horizontal wire running around your full perimeter.

Wire calculation formula: Total wire metres = perimeter × strands. Total rolls needed = total metres ÷ 500 (metres per roll), rounded up.
Step 4 of 6

How will you power
your energizer?

Your power source affects the energizer model and whether you need a solar panel and battery. Every system includes a battery backup as standard.

🔌
Mains Electricity (KPLC)
Powered by your mains supply. Includes standard 12V battery backup for KPLC outages — fence stays live through power cuts.

Calculation Guide

How to Calculate Electric
Fence Materials in Kenya

Understanding the formulas behind the configurator helps you verify quantities and adapt to site-specific conditions.

01 · WIRE
How Much Fencing Wire Do You Need?
Wire is sold in 500-metre rolls of 1.6mm galvanised high-tensile wire (KES 7,000 per roll). The formula is straightforward:
Rolls = ⌈ (Perimeter × Strands) ÷ 500 ⌉
Example: 100m perimeter × 10 strands = 1,000m total wire ÷ 500 = 2 rolls. Always round up — never buy short. We also recommend adding 10% for connections, tensioning and waste.
02 · ENERGIZER
What Size Energizer Do You Need?
The rule of thumb is 1 Joule output per kilometre of total fence wire, with a 50% buffer for vegetation, dry soil conditions, and fence age. Total wire = perimeter × strands.
Joules = (Perimeter × Strands ÷ 1000) × 1.5
Example: 100m × 10 strands = 1,000m = 1km × 1.5 = 1.5J minimum. The Nemtek Wizord 2 (2J) is the standard residential recommendation in Kenya.
03 · EARTH RODS
How Many Earth Rods Do You Need?
Proper earthing is the most overlooked component of electric fence installations in Kenya. Without adequate earth, the circuit cannot complete and the fence delivers no shock. Minimum 3 rods for any fence.
Earth rods = max(3, ⌈ Perimeter ÷ 100 ⌉)
Space rods 3m apart in moist soil. For sandy ASAL soils (Laikipia, Kajiado, Garissa), use a bi-polar fence design and add extra rods. KES 1,500 each.
04 · INSULATORS
Wall-Top Insulators vs Farm Insulators
Wall-top fences use W-post bracket sets (1 set per 3m of perimeter). Each W-post holds multiple strands. Cost: KES 420 per set including insulators. Farm/free-standing fences use individual line post insulators per strand (1 per post per strand). At 8m post spacing: posts = perimeter ÷ 8. Total insulators = posts × strands.
05 · WARNING SIGNS
KEBS-Required Warning Sign Spacing
Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) requires warning signs at regular intervals visible from both sides of the fence. The standard recommendation is 1 sign per 10 metres of perimeter length.
Signs = ⌈ Perimeter ÷ 10 ⌉
Warning signs are printed in both English and Swahili as required by KEBS. Cost: KES 350 each. Failure to display signs can affect insurance claims and legal liability.
06 · GATE HANDLES
Gate Handle Sets and Loop Insulators
Each gate opening requires two gate handle insulators (one on each side of the gate). These allow each strand to pass through the gate opening with a spring-tensioned insulated handle that can be unhooked to open the gate. For multi-strand gates, all strands are typically combined into a single gate hook per side. Cost: KES 900 per gate set.
Energizer Selection Guide

Choosing the Right Energizer
for Your Fence in Kenya

The energizer is the most important component. An undersized energizer leaves your fence weak. An oversized one wastes money. Use this table to verify the configurator's recommendation.

Model Brand Output Max Fence Wire Best For Power Price (KES)
Wizord 2 Nemtek 2 Joules ~1.3km wire Small residential walls, bungalows Mains + battery 14,000
Druid 15 Nemtek 15 Joules ~10km wire Estates, warehouses, large commercial Mains + battery 32,000
MB12 IP JVA 12 Joules ~8km wire Farms with app monitoring required Mains / solar 24,000
X3 Solar Stafix 3 Joules ~2km wire Medium farms, cattle containment Built-in solar 50,000
X12i Solar Stafix 12 Joules ~8km wire Large farms, wildlife deterrence External solar 62,000
JMB JUMBO JVA 28 Joules ~18km wire Game parks, conservancies, elephant deterrence External solar / mains 85,000

FAQ

Materials & Calculation
Questions Answered

How do I calculate how much fencing wire I need in Kenya?+
Multiply your perimeter length (metres) by the number of wire strands. This gives your total wire length in metres. Divide by 500 (one roll = 500m) and round up to the nearest whole number. Rolls = ⌈ (Perimeter × Strands) ÷ 500 ⌉. Example: 120m perimeter × 10 strands = 1,200m total ÷ 500 = 2.4 → 3 rolls at KES 7,000 each. Our configurator above does this automatically.
What size energizer do I need for my fence?+
Use the formula: Joules = (Perimeter × Strands ÷ 1000) × 1.5. Example: 100m perimeter × 10 strands = 1,000m = 1km × 1.5 = 1.5J minimum. Select the next model up from this minimum. For a standard Nairobi 50×100 plot with 10 strands, the Nemtek Wizord 2 (2J) or JVA Z18 (8J) are the standard recommendations depending on budget.
How many W-post bracket sets do I need for a wall-top fence?+
Space W-post bracket sets every 2–3 metres along your wall. The standard spacing in Kenya is 3 metres, giving one W-post set per 3m. W-post sets = ⌈ Perimeter ÷ 3 ⌉. Example: 100m perimeter ÷ 3 = 34 W-post sets. Each set includes the metal W-bracket, bolts, and insulators for all wire strands. Cost: approximately KES 420 per set.
Why does proper earthing matter and how many earth rods do I need?+
An electric fence works by completing a circuit through the ground when an animal touches both the live wire and the earth. Without proper earthing, no shock is delivered — a common reason fences fail in Kenya. Minimum 3 rods of 1.2m copper-clad steel, spaced 3m apart, connected to the energizer earth terminal. For long fences: Rods = max(3, ⌈ Perimeter ÷ 100 ⌉). Sandy soils (Laikipia, Kajiado) require more rods or a bi-polar fence design. Earth rods: KES 1,500 each.
How many KEBS warning signs do I need and are they required by law?+
Yes — KEBS warning signs are required by law under Kenya's electric fence regulations. The standard is 1 warning sign per 10 metres of perimeter. Signs must be visible from both sides of the fence and printed in both English and Swahili. Failure to display signs can affect liability and insurance claims. Cost: KES 350 each. Our configurator includes the correct quantity automatically.
What is the difference between a lightning diverter and an earth rod?+
Earth rods complete the normal operating circuit of the fence. A lightning diverter (also called a lightning arrester or choke) is a different component — it protects the energizer from voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes near the fence line. Without a lightning diverter, a nearby lightning strike can destroy your energizer instantly. Every installation should include one. Cost: KES 2,500. Our configurator includes it as standard.
