Standard design assumed: wall-top fence, posts about every 3 m, strainers on corners and ends, earthing, warning signs along the fence. Unusual walls, steep sites or very long runs need a custom design.
Electric fence systems we install in Kenya
The right fence depends on what you are protecting and what is already there. These are the systems we install and repair, from a single residential wall to a farm boundary.
Wall-top electric fence
Insulated posts fixed to the top of an existing wall carry four, six, eight or ten live wires. It is the most common electric fence for homes, estates, schools and compounds in Nairobi, Kiambu and Mombasa, because an intruder meets the fence before the wall top.
Free-standing perimeter electric fence
For plots with no wall, open land, construction sites and yards. Posts are set in the ground and strained wires form the barrier. We quote these after a site survey because ground, slope and length vary.
Solar electric fence
A solar panel, battery and energiser keep the fence live where mains power is unreliable or absent. A good fit for farms, ranches, plots and rural homes.
Farm and livestock electric fencing
Keeps animals in, deters wildlife and discourages theft. Farm fences use a different design from security fencing, with fewer wires and energisers built for long runs and vegetation.
Electric fence alarm and siren
A siren kit with strobe light, plus gate contacts that react when wires are cut, shorted or a gate is opened. GSM alerts to your phone are available on request.
Razor wire installation
Galvanised or green coated razor wire, installed on its own or combined with an electric fence for layered perimeter security.
Electric fence repair and maintenance
Fault finding, re-tensioning, replacing insulators and broken wire, energiser servicing and system tests, on fences we installed or anyone else's.
Fence and gate integration
Electric fencing planned around automatic sliding and swing gates, with gate contacts so an opened gate is detected by the alarm.
Free-standing and farm fences are not covered by the calculator above. Request a site survey and we will price them for you.
How an electric fence works
An energiser turns power from the mains, a battery or a solar panel into short, repeated high-voltage pulses and sends them along the fence wires. When someone touches the fence they complete the circuit to earth and feel a sharp shock that makes most people retreat.
The pulses are brief and low in energy. They are designed to deter, not to injure, provided the fence is built to specification with proper earthing and clear warning signs. That is why installation quality matters more than the brand on the box.
An electric fence is also a detection system. If a wire is cut, bridged to the wall or pulled down, the voltage drops and the alarm sounds. You get warning at the perimeter, before anyone reaches your doors and windows.
Keep children and pets away from the wires, keep vegetation off the fence, and have it checked regularly. Estates and landlords may have rules about electric fences, so confirm before you install. We are happy to advise.
What goes into an electric fence
Your bill of materials uses these parts. Here is what each one does.
- Energiser
- The unit that generates the pulses. Sized by fence length and number of zones. Mains, battery or solar powered. See our Nemtek, Stafix and JVA energisers.
- High-tensile wire
- Carries the pulse along the fence. Eight lines is a common wall-top layout for higher security.
- W posts
- Fixed to the wall top at roughly 3 m spacing. They hold the insulators and keep the wires in line.
- Insulators
- Keep the live wire from touching the post or wall so the pulse is not lost.
- Corner and end strainers
- Hold the wire tight at corners and at the ends of a run.
- Earth rods
- Complete the circuit. A poor earth is the most common reason a fence feels weak.
- High-voltage cable
- Carries the pulse from the energiser to the fence. Insulated cable, sized by the distance you entered.
- Warning signs
- Placed along the fence so everyone can see it is live.
- Alarm kit
- Siren kit (siren, strobe light and box), gate contacts and cable that signal a cut wire, a short or a forced gate.
- Razor wire
- An optional physical barrier in galvanised or green coated finish.
How much does an electric fence cost in Kenya?
There is no single price per metre, because the fence you need is not the same as your neighbour's. These are the things that move the total, in roughly the order they matter.
- Wall length. Wire, posts and insulators all scale with length.
- Number of wire lines. Going from six to eight lines adds a third more wire and insulators.
- Corners and gates. Every corner needs strainers on every line, and gates need alarm contacts.
- Energiser size and type. Longer fences and multiple zones need larger energisers.
- Alarm kit. Optional, but we recommend it in Kenya.
- Razor wire. Priced per metre, in galvanised or green coated finish.
- Access and site conditions. Tall walls, difficult access and long cable runs take more time.
- Installation. The calculator shows an installation estimate for guidance on cost.
Electric fence, razor wire, a higher wall or CCTV
| Option | What it does well | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|
| Electric fence | Deters before contact and raises an alarm when tampered with. | Needs power or battery, and regular checks. |
| Razor wire | A physical barrier with no power needed. | No alarm, and a determined intruder can cut through. |
| Raising the wall | Permanent and low maintenance. | Costly, slow to build and still gives no warning. |
| CCTV on its own | Records evidence and lets you watch remotely. | Records the break-in. It rarely stops it. |
Electric fencing for homes, estates, schools, farms and businesses
Homes and residential compounds
A wall-top fence with an alarm is the standard upgrade for houses in Karen, Runda, Kileleshwa, Lavington, Syokimau and similar areas. Most use six or eight lines.
Gated communities and apartments
Longer boundaries, several gates and a guardhouse call for a multi-zone energiser so a fault in one section does not shut down the whole fence.
Schools and institutions
Boundary protection around dormitories, classrooms and playing fields, with warning signs and fences kept out of reach of pupils.
Farms, ranches and flower farms
Solar electric fences protect crops, livestock, pumps and stores where mains power is not available.
Warehouses, factories and yards
Perimeter security with alarm monitoring for stock, vehicles and equipment, often paired with CCTV and automatic gates.
Plots and construction sites
Free-standing electric fencing protects land and materials before a wall is built.

Electric fence questions, answered
How much does an electric fence cost in Kenya?
The cost depends on wall length, the number of wire lines, corners, gates, razor wire, the energiser you choose and installation. Use the calculator on this page for an itemised estimate in KSh including 16% VAT, then book a site survey to confirm the final quotation.
How many wire lines should a wall-top electric fence have?
Four lines suit a light deterrent, six lines suit most homes, eight lines are a common choice for higher-risk homes, estates and commercial sites, and ten lines are used where maximum security is needed. We recommend a configuration after seeing your wall and your risk.
Is an electric fence safe for children and pets?
A correctly installed security energiser sends short pulses designed to deter, not injure. Fences must be installed to specification with proper earthing and clear warning signs, and children and pets should be kept away from the wires.
Does an electric fence work during a power cut?
It can. Many energisers run from a 12V battery as well as the mains, and solar-powered setups suit sites with unreliable or no mains power. Tell us about your power situation at the site survey and we will recommend the right energiser and power arrangement.
Can an electric fence run on solar power?
Yes. A solar electric fence uses a solar panel, a battery and a suitable energiser. It is a good fit for farms, ranches, plots and rural homes where mains power is unreliable or unavailable.
What is the difference between an electric fence and razor wire?
Razor wire is a passive physical barrier. An electric fence is an active deterrent that can also trigger an alarm when wires are cut or touched. Many Kenyan properties install both for layered security.
How long does electric fence installation take?
A typical residential wall is usually completed in one to three days, depending on length, corners and access. Larger estates, schools and commercial sites take longer and are scheduled after the site survey.
Which energiser do I need for my fence?
The right energiser depends on total fence length, the number of zones and whether you want an alarm. The calculator recommends a suitable energiser for your wall length, and we confirm the model at the site survey.
What maintenance does an electric fence need?
Keep vegetation off the wires, check the fence voltage regularly, re-tension slack wires, replace damaged insulators and test the alarm. We offer repair and annual maintenance visits.
Do you install electric fences outside Nairobi?
Yes. We install in Nairobi, Kiambu, Thika, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret and other towns. Send your location and we will confirm travel and scheduling.
