Why Is My Electric Fence Not Working? 10 Common Faults and How to Fix Them

There’s a particular kind of unease that comes with realising your electric fence isn’t actually doing its job — a weak shock that barely registers, an energizer that’s gone completely silent, or an alarm that keeps triggering for no obvious reason. None of these are unusual, and almost none of them mean you need to replace the entire system. In our experience assessing fences across Kenya, the same handful of faults account for the overwhelming majority of call-outs. Here’s what they are, what causes them, and what genuinely needs a professional versus what you can check yourself first.

Before You Do Anything Else: Test the Voltage

The single most useful first step is checking your fence’s actual voltage with a basic digital fence tester — a simple, inexpensive tool that tells you immediately whether the problem is a total failure or just reduced output. A healthy residential fence typically reads several thousand volts; anything reading low, inconsistent along the fence line, or at zero tells you roughly where to start looking. The 10 Most Common Faults We See

1. Vegetation touching the wire. This is, by a wide margin, the most frequent cause of a weak or dying fence. Grass, hedges, or overhanging branches touching the live wire constantly drain current, sometimes enough to drop a strong fence down to a barely noticeable shock. Fix: clear vegetation at least 30cm back from the entire fence line, and make it a recurring task rather than a one-time clean-up — this alone resolves a surprising share of “my fence stopped working” calls.

2. Inadequate or failed earthing. A fence is only as good as its earth return system, and this is where installation quality really shows. Poor earthing — too few earth stakes, incorrect spacing, or an earthing system that was never suited to your soil type in the first place — can leave even an expensive, correctly sized energizer performing at a fraction of its rated output. Rocky or highland soils in particular often need a different earthing configuration than standard installations assume. Fix: this genuinely needs a professional check — earth resistance testing isn’t something a basic tester alone will diagnose reliably.

3. An undersized energizer for your fence’s actual load. If your fence has grown since installation — more strands, extra gates, additional runs — the original energizer may simply no longer be powerful enough for the total load. Fix: an energizer upgrade sized to your current fence, not the one it started as. 4. A dying or already-dead battery. For battery-backed and solar systems, a battery nearing the end of its lifespan (typically 3–5 years for sealed lead-acid units) often shows up first as intermittent operation or a fence that fails specifically during power cuts or overnight. Fix: test battery voltage directly, and replace proactively rather than waiting for full failure — a battery on its way out rarely gives much warning.

5. Loose, corroded or broken wire connections. Every joint in a fence system is a potential weak point, and connections that were fine at installation can loosen or corrode over months of weather exposure. Fix: visually inspect all connection points, particularly at corners, gates and the energizer terminal itself, and re-tighten or replace corroded connectors.

6. Damaged or degraded insulators. Cracked, UV-damaged or broken insulators allow the live wire to contact posts or walls directly, leaking current exactly the way vegetation does. Insulators typically need replacing every 3–5 years even without visible damage, since UV exposure degrades plastic and porcelain insulators gradually. 7. Lightning or power surge damage. A nearby lightning strike, or a voltage surge during grid power restoration after an outage, can silently damage an energizer’s internal components without any obvious external sign — the unit may power on but deliver a much weaker pulse, or fail outright. Fix: if your fence stopped working suddenly after a storm or power outage, suspect the energizer first; a surge protector fitted at installation significantly reduces this risk going forward.

8. A counterfeit or uncertified energizer. Unbranded units, or units sold as genuine JVA, Nemtek or Stafix products at prices well below market rate, are an increasingly common source of early failure — and a genuine safety concern, since they aren’t necessarily built to controlled voltage and pulse-duration standards. Fix: if your energizer failed well before its expected lifespan, and you’re not certain of its origin, this is worth investigating specifically — we can usually tell within minutes during an assessment.

9. Water ingress at the energizer or connection points. Kenya’s rainy seasons take a toll on any electrical enclosure that isn’t properly sealed or sited. Moisture inside the energizer housing, or at exposed connection points, can cause intermittent faults that are genuinely difficult to diagnose without opening the unit. Fix: ensure the energizer is mounted in a dry, ventilated, weatherproof location, and have connection points inspected if faults appear specifically during or after heavy rain.

10. A system that’s simply been extended past its original design. Adding a gate, extending the perimeter, or adding strands after the original installation without reassessing the whole system — earthing capacity, energizer output, wire gauge — often leaves the fence technically “working” but performing well below what the property actually needs. Fix: a full system reassessment rather than patching individual symptoms, particularly if the fence has grown significantly since it was first installed.

The Fault-Finding Shortcut: A Digital Fault Finder
