How to Calculate Electric
Fence Materials in Kenya
Understanding the formulas behind the configurator helps you verify quantities and adapt to site-specific conditions.
01 · WIRE
Fencing Wire Quantity
Sold in 500m rolls of 1.6mm galvanised wire at KES 7,000/roll.
Rolls = ⌈ (Perimeter × Strands) ÷ 500 ⌉
Example: 100m × 10 strands = 1,000m ÷ 500 = 2 rolls. We add 10% for waste.02 · ENERGIZER
Energizer Sizing
Rule: 1 Joule per km of total wire, with 50% buffer.
Joules = (Perimeter × Strands ÷ 1000) × 1.5
Example: 100m × 10 strands = 1km × 1.5 = 1.5J min. Nemtek Wizord 2 (2J, KES 14,000) is the standard residential choice.03 · EARTH RODS
Earthing Requirements
Without proper earthing, no shock is delivered. Minimum 3 rods.
Rods = max(3, ⌈ Perimeter ÷ 100 ⌉)
Space 3m apart in moist soil. Sandy soils need more. KES 1,500 each.04 · INSULATORS
Wall-Top vs Farm
Wall-top: W-post bracket sets at 3m spacing = Perimeter ÷ 3. KES 420/set. Farm/free-standing: individual line insulators per strand (1 per post per strand). At 8m spacing: posts = Perimeter ÷ 8.
05 · WARNING SIGNS
KEBS Legal Requirement
KEBS requires signs at regular intervals on both sides.
Signs = ⌈ Perimeter ÷ 10 ⌉
English + Swahili required. KES 350 each. Failure affects liability and insurance.06 · GATE HANDLES
Gate Insulators
Each gate opening needs two gate handle insulators (one each side). All strands hook through the insulated spring handles to allow gate opening. Cost: KES 900 per gate set.

How do I calculate fencing wire for an electric fence in Kenya?+
Multiply perimeter length by number of strands. Divide by 500 and round up:
Rolls = ⌈ (Perimeter × Strands) ÷ 500 ⌉. Example: 120m × 10 strands = 1,200m ÷ 500 = 2.4 → 3 rolls at KES 7,000 each (KES 21,000). The configurator does this automatically.What size energizer do I need for my fence?+
Use:
Joules = (Perimeter × Strands ÷ 1000) × 1.5. Example: 100m × 10 strands = 1km × 1.5 = 1.5J minimum. Select the next energizer model above this minimum. For a standard Nairobi 50×100 plot with 10 strands, the Nemtek Wizord 2 (2J, KES 14,000) is the standard recommendation.How many W-post bracket sets for a wall-top fence?+
Standard spacing is every 3 metres. Formula:
W-post sets = ⌈ Perimeter ÷ 3 ⌉. Example: 100m ÷ 3 = 34 sets at KES 420 each (KES 14,280). Each set includes the metal W-bracket, bolts, and insulators for all strands.Why does proper earthing matter and how many earth rods do I need?+
An electric fence completes a circuit through the ground. Without proper earthing, no shock is delivered. Minimum 3 rods (1.2m copper-clad steel), spaced 3m apart. Formula:
Rods = max(3, ⌈ Perimeter ÷ 100 ⌉). Sandy ASAL soils (Laikipia, Kajiado) need extra rods or a bi-polar fence design. KES 1,500 each.How many KEBS warning signs do I need?+
KEBS requires signs at 1 per 10 metres of perimeter, visible from both sides. Signs must be in English and Swahili. Formula:
Signs = ⌈ Perimeter ÷ 10 ⌉. Failure to display signs can affect liability and insurance claims. KES 350 each. Auto-included in the configurator.What is the difference between a lightning diverter and an earth rod?+
Earth rods complete the normal operating circuit. A lightning diverter (arrester) protects the energizer from voltage spikes caused by lightning strikes near the fence. Without one, a lightning strike can destroy your energizer instantly. Cost: KES 2,500. Auto-included in every configurator output.
