How to Set Up a Portable Electric Fence in Kenya

Plan your line
Walk the fence route, count post positions at 5–8m spacing (cattle) or 3–5m (horses, goats).

Install energizer & earth
Drive 3 earth stakes into moist soil 1m apart. Connect to energizer. Good earthing = effective fence.

Connect lead-out cable
Run insulated cable from energizer to first post. Use alligator clamp to connect to conductor.

Push in posts
Push pigtail or step-in posts into the ground at your planned spacing. Use fibreglass + hammer for hard ground.

Pay out conductor
Walk the line, hook polywire / poli-rope through each post. Keep gentle tension. Attach gate handle at openings.

Test before use
Switch on. Use voltage tester at far end — must read ≥2,000V for cattle; ≥3,000V for goats. Check earthing first if low.

Daily move
Wind conductor back onto reel, pull posts, re-erect at new location. A 200m fence moves in under 10 minutes with practice.

What is the difference between JVA Polywire and Poli-Rope?+
JVA Polywire is a thin (2–4mm) round conductor — lightweight, inexpensive and easy to reel, ideal for single-strand cattle strip grazing on a standard dairy farm. Poli-Rope is a heavier braided rope (6mm or 8mm) with more metal filaments — stronger, more conductive over longer distances, more visible to animals, and far more durable under daily moves. For farms with daily strip moves or runs over 300m, 8mm Poli-Rope at KSh 14,000 per 200m reel is a better long-term investment than cheaper polywire.
Which posts should I use — pigtail, step-in or fibreglass rods?+
Pigtail posts (galvanised steel spiral) are ideal for single-strand cattle strip grazing in soft to medium soil — they push in and pull out in seconds. Step-in plastic posts suit multi-strand fences for horses, goats and sheep, and have clips at multiple heights. Fibreglass rods are essential on Kenya's hard, dry soils (black cotton in Rift Valley, rocky ground in Laikipia, dry red clay in Kajiado) where step-in posts cannot be pushed by hand. For corner and end posts on any fence type, fibreglass rods provide better anchoring under tension.
How do I maintain good earthing in Kenya's dry season?+
Poor earthing is the most common cause of fence failure in Kenya, especially during the dry months when surface soil loses conductivity. Solutions: use a minimum of 3 earth stakes, each 1m long, driven at least 1m apart. Position stakes in naturally moist areas — near a water trough, in a shaded dip, or near stream banks. Pour water around stakes during very dry periods. Check voltage at the far end of the fence using your tester — a reading below 2,000V almost always indicates an earthing problem rather than a fence fault. A return-wire earth system significantly improves earthing on very dry sites.
Can I use portable electric fencing for goats and sheep in Kenya?+
Yes, but goats and sheep require more strands and higher voltage than cattle. Goats need 3–4 strands at approximately 25cm, 50cm, 75cm and optionally 95cm heights, with step-in posts at 4–5m spacing. The energizer must deliver at least 3,000V at the fence under load — goats have thick fleece and hooves that reduce the effectiveness of a weak fence. JVA Polywire works well for goat containment. Train naïve goats to the electric fence first by confining them in a small pen with a live wire before introducing them to the portable system.

How long does polywire and poli-rope last in Kenya's climate?+
Quality JVA polywire and poli-rope are manufactured with UV-stabilised polyethylene specifically designed for Kenya's intense equatorial sunlight. With careful handling — winding onto a reel after each move, keeping off vehicle tracks, and storing out of direct sun when not in use — good quality poli-rope should last 3–7 years of daily use. Signs it needs replacement: visible metal filament breaks, low voltage despite good earthing, or UV degradation (brittleness or cracking). Avoid cheap polywire from unknown sources — it may fail within a single rainy season.
What energizer do I need for a 200m strip grazing fence in Kenya?+
For a 200m fence with 1–2 strands for cattle strip grazing, a 12V battery energizer with a minimum output of 1–2 Joules is sufficient. The JVA B40 (battery) or equivalent Stafix model covers up to 5–15km of fence and will easily power a 200m strip fence. If you have mains electricity, a mains-powered energizer gives stronger output. For remote farms without power, a solar energizer (JVA or Stafix solar series) charges an internal battery during the day and powers the fence 24/7. Always select an energizer rated for at least 5× your actual fence length to account for voltage loss through vegetation contact.
